충북 교육도서관 리모델링
(Chungbuk Educational Library Renovation)

오래된 건물을 새롭게 한다는 일은 단순한 갱신이 아니라,
시간의 기억을 품은 구조에 새로운 호흡을 불어넣는 과정이었습니다.

충북 교육도서관은 1980년대에 지어진 건물로,
낮은 층고와 어두운 내부, 단열이 부족한 벽체로 인해
오랫동안 사람들의 발길에서 멀어져 있었습니다.

우리는 이곳을 빛과 자연, 그리고 사람의 속도가 함께 머무는 도서관으로 다시 세웠습니다.

기존의 일부 층을 허물고 2층과 3층을 잇는 유니버설 램프(Universal Ramp)를 두었습니다.
이 램프는 단순한 동선이 아니라,
빛이 천천히 내려앉고 사람이 느리게 걸으며 사유할 수 있는 경사로 설계했습니다.
현대의 빠른 일상 속에서 걷는 속도가 곧 생각의 속도가 될 수 있도록,
그 안에 느림과 회복이 공존하도록 했습니다.

어린이자료실과 유아자료실은 두 개 층을 관통하는 오픈 구조로 계획해
하늘의 빛과 나무의 그림자가 자연스럽게 스며들게 했습니다.
1층은 아이들이 마음껏 뛰어놀고 책과 놀이가 이어지는 열린 문화공간으로,
2층은 부모와 아이가 함께 머무는 열람실로 구성했습니다.

램프 주변에는 북라운지와 포켓 공간을 두어,
책을 읽거나 잠시 머물며 사유할 수 있는 여백을 마련했습니다.
공간의 경계는 벽이 아닌 가구와 색, 빛의 방향으로 조율해
고정된 기능이 아닌, 상황과 사람의 움직임에 따라 형태를 달리했습니다.

3층에는 기존에 비어 있던 옥상을 열어 문화정원을 조성했습니다.
단절된 구조를 자연으로 이어주는 통로이자,
문화예술열람실과 연결된 빛과 바람의 정원이 되었습니다.

입면은 기존의 단조로운 화강석 대신,
빛과 공기, 자연을 상징하는 세 가지 옐로 아이보리 톤으로 새롭게 구성했습니다.
입체감 있는 프레임이 리듬을 만들며,
나무가 군집을 이루어 숲을 이루듯
다양한 사람과 책이 모여 도서관을 이루는 풍경을 표현했습니다.

내부의 색은 층마다 다른 테마를 품고 있습니다.
아이들의 층은 밝은 오렌지와 초록으로 생동감을,
청소년의 층은 푸른색으로 사유의 깊이를,
어른의 층은 부드러운 아이보리로 안정감을 담았습니다.
이 색의 흐름은 세대 간의 리듬을 잇는 하나의 시간적 스펙트럼이 되었습니다.

충북 교육도서관은 과거의 구조 속에서
새로운 빛과 공기, 그리고 사람의 속도를 회복한 건축으로 다시 태어났습니다.

이곳에서 건축은 더 이상 벽이 아니라,
빛과 사람, 자연이 함께 머무는 열린 풍경이 되었습니다.

Renovating an old building is not a matter of replacement,
but a quiet act of breathing new life into a structure that remembers time.

Originally built in the 1980s, the library had long been closed off from people —
its low ceilings, dark interiors, and lack of insulation made it fragile against light and weather.
The project sought to revive it as a place where light, nature, and the pace of people could coexist.

A part of the existing floor was opened to insert a universal ramp connecting the second and third floors.
More than circulation, it became a gentle slope of light and time,
inviting visitors to slow down, to walk and think in rhythm.
In a fast-moving society, this space restores the calm of movement —
a place where coexistence and reflection find their own speed.

The children’s and infants’ reading rooms were reshaped into an open double-height structure,
where daylight and the shadow of trees filter through the air.
The first floor unfolds as a free cultural space for play and discovery,
while the second floor offers reading rooms where parents and children can share time together.

Along the ramp, small book lounges and pocket spaces offer moments to pause,
to sit, to read, to breathe.
Walls were replaced with boundaries of furniture, color, and light,
so that the zoning of space shifts naturally with people’s presence and activity.
Each moment creates a new rhythm within the larger whole.

On the third floor, the once-unused rooftop was opened into a cultural garden,
linking the building to nature.
Facing the art reading room, this garden allows light and wind to flow through,
turning the upper level into a living landscape.

The façade was reimagined in three shades of yellow ivory,
symbolizing light, air, and nature.
Its rhythmic panels overlap in depth,
like trees gathering to form a forest —
a metaphor for how diverse people and books come together to form a library.

Inside, each level carries its own tone:
bright orange and green for children,
cool blue for youth,
and warm ivory for adults —
a gradient of color that connects generations through rhythm and time.

The Chungbuk Educational Library is not merely a renovation,
but a rebirth —
a place that restores light, air, and the human pace within the memory of structure.
Here, architecture is no longer a wall,
but an open landscape where coexistence, rhythm, the circulation of light, and the pace of people live together.
